Two massive boxes

...arrived this afternoon. They contain the 8ft x 6ft shed that will be the new home for my scopes. I got the Argos delivery blokes to dump the boxes on the patio, figuring it would be something of a mickey-take to ask them to take the boxes up to the top of the garden! So, over the weekend (although, that depends on what happens as my sister has invited herself and her kids down for the weekend which will no doubt chuck a spanner into these particular plans. Don't get me wrong, it's always a pleasure to see them but I would have liked to get this done), me and my aunt will have to - somehow - get these huge boxes up the garden so we can put the shed up. In the meantime, I have a slightly larger than 8ft by 6ft hole to dig one evening and blocks to put in.
I just hope this plan is successful...

  1. I sure hope this works for you Faith. Too bad about family coming . . . at least they haven't moved in with you! Good luck in getting it dug out and in getting the materials up to the site. I think you'll have a setup that will work. It's the journey and the journey with this won't ever end I think. Enjoy it and I'll look forward to seeing your results.

  2. Thanks Jay. I hope it works, too! As long as it's reasonably secure and I can keep any damp at bay then there's no reason why it shouldn't work.

I am going to begin the digging later on today and hope to get the base laid tomorrow, depending on the weather. From there, it's just a case of putting the shed together although that might well be the hardest part, it comes in loads of different sections and has a thick instruction book! Assembly of the shed is a two person job so it'll more than likely get finished next weekend.

  3. You shouldn't have any problems keeping you're equipment dry Faith,

I think I mentioned. I use a 12watt energy saver bulb to keep any moisture from forming on my 8" mirror. I'm going to be making something similar for the OD250, to sit on the bottom of the rocker box.

I also have a sheet of bubble rap covering my SPX 200-800. This helps to keep the scope dry, and stops anything falling onto the tube.

My shed is now ten years old and it's still OK. It certainly made a big difference with scope cool down time. I had to wait a good hour for thermal equilibrium when I had my telescope in doors. Now I only have to wait half that time.

Good luck with your project. I'll be interested to see some photos when it's UP!

    Cheers
    PB.

  4. Thanks Paul. You did mention the bulb and it's one thing I'm looking at. Covering the scope (the secondary end is covered but the mirror end is open at the bottom) is also what I will do. I also have loads of silica gel knocking around, as well.
I am just off up the garden to begin the digging!
